When food arrives at the Marion Polk Food Share warehouse, it needs to be sorted and repacked before it can be distributed to our network of community partners. The Food Share relies on volunteers to complete scheduled projects, so we really appreciate it when people can contribute their time! In the Volunteer Action Center, volunteers are typically repacking bulk food donations into family-sized portions to be distributed to the community. Volunteers also might help with sorting food donations by category of food and expiration date to ensure we are only distributing quality foods to our neighbors.
Scheduling details: Open to groups of 2–20 participants. Schedule large groups at least three weeks in advance.
For food safety and general safety requirements, volunteers must wear closed-toe and closed-heel shoes, and shirts with sleeves (long or short sleeves are fine – no tank tops). We also ask that volunteers remove all removable jewelry, watches, and earbuds before volunteering to keep the food we are repacking safe for our neighbors. (Flat ring bands are fine but any ring that could tear through a vinyl glove should be removed.)
For general safety in the warehouse, any volunteer under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (18 years or older) while they volunteer. Youth groups should be accompanied by adult chaperones.
All volunteers are required to maintain a professional and positive environment. This includes language, gestures, clothing, and topics of conversation that are inconsiderate or disrespectful of others. Some projects may require volunteers to wear hair nets, aprons, gloves (provided by the Food Share). Some tasks may include bending, moving, and lifting up to 40 pounds.

WREN offers a variety of in-class and outdoor programs. We cover the following topics in-class/indoor setting: What is Wetland?, Migration Madness (Avian), Powerful Pollinators, and Wetlands & Watersheds. Our field trips cover a variety of similar topics and activities as our in-class programs such as birding/bird watching, plant ID, track/scat/skull & other animal signs, pollinators, and more! These field trips generally take place at the West Eugene Wetlands, but we can also host field trips in other locations.
Indoor programs: Year-round
Outdoor field trips:
March, April, and early May: The vernal pools begin to fill up and macro-invertebrates start to hatch and grow. The weather can be cooler and more damp, but this is a nice time to discover macro-invertebrates in the pools. This is also a great time to talk about migratory birds.
May and June: Flowers are popping up in abundance with the increase of sunshine and light. This is a nice time of year to talk about pollinators and their relationship with flowers.
Scheduling details: Open to groups of 20–40. For field trips/outdoor activities, participants should wear closed-toed shoes, bring a water bottle, and dress for the weather. We generally walk on paved or gravel paths, occasionally going off trail to do activities like plant ID. The cost is $35 per program and $30 for every subsequent program.
Payment is due on the day of a program; preferably a week prior. If there are poor weather conditions for outdoor programs, WREN can reschedule.
Please request at least three weeks in advance. Email info@wewetlands.org to schedule.
