This course provides a foundation of First Aid principles and skills for individuals responding to remote emergencies when immediate emergency medical services are delayed or unavailable. This is a scenario-based class, and there will be a lot of hands-on skills practice. Participants must be physically able to move around in all-weather gear and lie on the ground as a simulated "victim" for up to 30 minutes. You will receive a Red Cross Certification for Wilderness and Remote First Aid (valid for two years) upon completion. This certification is required for Girl Scout activities when Emergency Medical Services are more than 30 minutes away and/or when cell service is limited.

 

Price

$50.00/adult. This training has been generously subsidized by the Theda Family Endowment.

 

Participant Information

  • Training will take place in person over two days beginning at 8:30 am on Saturday, February 8 through 6:30 pm on Sunday, February 9. This training will take place at the GSOSW Portland Service Center (9620 SW Barbur Blvd. Portland, OR 97219). 
  • A confirmation email with additional details including a detailed packing list will be sent a few days before the training. Please check your spam folder.
  • Participants must be present for the entire training to receive certification and credit for this course.
  • GSOSW volunteer trainings are adult, member-only, and council-only, events. Children of attendees may not accompany adults to this training, please ensure alternate arrangements have been made. 

 

Prerequisites

Participants must have a valid CPR, AED, & First Aid certification on file with GSOSW before attending this training. Please submit a copy to via the GSOSW First Aid and CPR/AED Certification Submission form if not already on file. Registrants who do not have this certification on file by the cancellation/registration deadline of February 2, 2025, will have their registration canceled and will not be offered a refund.

 

Supplies

Additional details to come in the confirmation email. Participants need to bring the following to both days of this training:

  • A personal backpack/daypack - packed with any supplies you would take for a long day hike. 
  • Appropriate clothing for both inside and outside (layers)
  • Comfortable outside shoes
  • Camp chair
  • Notepad and pen/pencil
  • Sack lunch, personal snacks, and a water bottle

Registration

Registration closes on February 2. Request for cancellation must be submitted via email to answers@girlscoutsosw.org by this date to receive a refund less the cancellation fee for this training ($25).
